1999 Bond Melbury. This rich #wine is very seductive on the nose with notes of ripe cherry, raspberry and a subtle implementation of oak. The palate is silky, with soft tannins, medium acidity and a long pleasant finish. Drink now through 2030.
1997 Harlan Estate, The Maiden. Showing a ripe nose of cassis, blackberry and some hints of leather. A fully integrated palate with velvet-like tannins, medium acidity and a long rich finish. An exceptional #wine that will continue to evolve into the mid 2030’s. Drink or hold
1997 @farnientewinery Cabernet Sauvignon. Showing a nose of deep, concentrated black fruit with an almost bloody and beefy undertone to it. The palate is very well balanced, with a perfect harmony of acid, alcohol and tannins. The palate is very subtle and enjoyable. Drink now.
1997 @caymuscab Special Selection. A very fruit driven #wine with notes of fresh strawberry, cranberry and a generous amount of oak. Grippy tannins and vibrant acidity are followed by a long and fruity finish. I’ve never personally been a real fan of Caymus. However, this wine appeals to a large group, and is always very consistent.
1996 @petermichaelwinery “Les Pavots” - Initially muted on the nose. It took the wine about 45 minutes to come to life, presenting itself with an intense notes of ripe cranberry, blackberry and notes of dried florals / tea. The palate is balanced, with fine grained tannins and a great deal of acidity. A fantastic wine that will continue to evolve for many years to come. Drink now through 2030.
1996 Joseph Phelps #Insignia. Deep garnet in the glass with notes of ripe raspberry, olive and a subtle implementation of oak. Velvety tannins, medium alcohol and perfectly balanced acidity transitions to a short and fruity finish. Drink now through 2040.
1996 @dominusestatewinery. Notes of VA on the nose, with a slightly unbalanced palate. Although still palatable, no further notes were made due to the initial faults detected.
1992 Opus One. Showing a beautiful nose of fresh raspberry, green bell pepper and a slight note of oak/minerality. The palate presents you with soft and luscious tannins, medium acidity and a long fruity finish. Reminiscent of a Saint Emilion Bordeaux. Drink now through 2030.
1990 @dunnvineyards Howell Mountain #CabernetSauvignon. Clear, bright ruby in the glass with notes of cherry, cassis and violet. A structured palate with high tannins, medium acidity and a long finish. This #wine is balanced, but drinking very young. It will continue to evolve for decades to come. Drink or hold.
A surprise bottle that did not disappoint - Served blind. 2015 @rennieestatewine “G” Assemblage (Appasimento). Deep and concentrated in the glass with an inviting nose of ripe plum, dried blackberry and a slight medicinal note. The plate is dense, with round tannins and a long almost port-like finish. This will absolutely reward you with some patience and time in the cellar. Drink 2025 +
2009 @cortesanbenedetto Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Camporal. Deep opulent appearance with notes of cherry, fig and a faint hint of menthol. Luscious mouth feel, fine tannins and balanced acidity are complimented by a long and rich finish. Drink or hold.
2002 Tommaso Bussola Amarone della Valpolicella Classico “BG”. Garnet appearance in the glass with a pronounced nose of dried fruit and raisin. The palate is dense, with a nice sense of weight to it. However, the balance is slightly off, with the acidity being somewhat overbearing. Good, but didn’t blow me away. Drink now.
1998 @zenatowinery Sergio Zenato Riserva Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. Deep ruby in the glass fading to a slight garnet around the rim. Ripe red berries and a hint of sweet fig on the nose translates to the palate with velvety tannins, and a perfect balance of alcohol and acidity. Drink or hold.
1997 @masiwines Campolongo Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. Showing a deep and concentrated appearance in the glass, with an immense nose ripe black berries and dark fruit. The palate is still quite youthful, and although fairly balanced, I still feel this #wine could benefit from further cellaring. Drink after 2024
1985 @brigaldara Recioto della Valpolicella Amarone Classico. Showing a slightly cloudy appearance in the glass with a dusty nose of tertiary fruit. The palate is quite tired, and although the #wine is still alive, it definitely had one foot out the door.
#wine no. 3 from our latest event was this 1983 @brigaldara Recioto della Valpolicella Amarone Classico. Unfortunately this bottle was slightly cooked - Although still drinkable, no further notes were made due to the initial fault.
#Wine no. 2 from our latest event was this 1978 Remo @farinawines Recioto della Valpolicella #Amarone Classico. Showing a youthful appearance in the glass, with a deep ruby core fading to slightly garnet rim. Mostly tertiary on the nose with notes of dried black berries, raisins and a faint floral note. Velvety tannins are followed by a long and intense finish. Drink now.
The first wine from our “Through the Decades of Amarone” event was this 1964 @cantine_bertani Recioto Della Valpolicella #Amarone Classico Superiore. Showing a gorgeous bouquet of lively fruit with some notes of dried plum and sweet fig. The plate is still quite youthful, with soft but slightly grippy tannins and a great sense of acidity. It’s hard to believe this #wine is 58 years old. Drink now.
